According to the Statehouse Bureau, a study conducted by the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety and the New Jersey Institute of Technology found that the number of drivers who wear their seatbelts has increased, resulting in fewer tickets. The survey showed that 94.51 percent of front-seat drivers and passengers wore seat belts, up from 93.73 percent last year.
In 1986, the first year the survey was conducted, only 35 percent of drivers wore them. Now that times have changed, it is clear that the road is not safe as it used to be. The state’s "Click It or Ticket" campaign caught 32,228 violators for not wearing seat belts from May 23 to June 5, which was down about 3,500 from last year. The state believes this drop was caused by the increase in seat belt use.
The study also found that 61 percent of all passengers in the backseat wear seat belts, going up from 48 percent last year, although the back seat adult percentage was only 35. "People in the front seat can be struck by unbelted rear-seat passengers who become high-speed projectiles in a crash," said Gary Poedubicky, the division’s acting director. "Making backseat passengers buckle up will help save lives."
