As mid July comes into full swing, the weather is only getting hotter. According to The Times of Trenton, the combination of heat and humidity yesterday made temperatures rise to above 100 degrees. This is the first of a series of days which will be extremely muggy in the Mercer County region.
The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the National Weather Service and Mercer County, issued a heat warning in anticipation of heat indexes approaching 105 to 110 degrees this week. In addition, local utility PSE&G released a statement saying it was monitoring weather conditions and the impact on its delivery system. Yesterday’s forecast had temperatures climb from 79 F at 7 a.m. to above 89 F at 1 p.m., according to the NWS.
Even after 6 p.m. when the temperature dropped just below 90 degrees F, the high humidity kept the heat index at a warm 98 F. Diedra Williams came with her daughter to the mall last evening. Her advice: “Stay inside. Stay in the building.” For other residents in Hamilton, some 2,000 homes lost power for an extended period and 6,000 lost power briefly when equipment at a PSE&G substation failed, PSE&G representative Beth Gill said. Gill could not confirm whether the failure was related to the high temperatures or the increased load generated from customers running air conditioners.
