According to The Associated Press, Irene is the first hurricane to threaten the U.S. in three years. Currently, it is on a course to rip through North Carolina on Saturday and continue up the East Coast. Forecasters Tuesday night said the latest National Hurricane Center projections have the storm over Cape May after midday Sunday, but hurricanes are known for their unpredictability.
"There’s a lot of uncertainty with the track right now. The center could be off the coast of New Jersey by Sunday afternoon," said Al Cope, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly office. Emergency officials are urging New Jersey residents to be prepared for the hurricane headed toward the East Coast.
The state Office of Emergency Management says evacuations would be likely in communities along the Jersey shore. This will be due to tidal and storm surge flooding if the storm reaches New Jersey near hurricane strength.
State Police spokesman Lt. Stephen Jones says shore residents should make sure emergency supply kits for their home and cars are fully stocked. He says residents should have a plan in place in case of an evacuation.
