When Lightning Strikes – What to do

5/4/2012 10:50:00 AM
Lightning can be scary for some of us and it can also be dangerous. Most standard homeowners' policies cover lightning damage. However as a homeowner it’s a good idea to regularly review your home policy to ensure you have adequate coverage under your Philadelphia insurance for lightning and other perils.

Damage to your home due to lightning strikes comes under property insurance. Lightning can cause electrical surges, damage appliances, and spark fires. Certain areas get frequent lightning strikes. You may want to hire a professional to install an appropriate lightning protection system to discharge lightning strikes into the ground. It’s also a good idea to unplug electrical devices during obvious storm activity, and use surge protectors to protect computers and appliances during electrical storms.

When lightning strikes your home, evaluate any damage as soon as possible. Contact the fire department or call 911 using a cell phone. Let the fire department assess the damages and check interior walls for fires. Notify your insurance agent immediately, and call an electrician to evaluate electric wiring damage throughout your home if necessary.

When severe damage occurs it’s important to let the professionals evaluate and deal with the damages when lightning strikes, and to wait for notification that it is safe to re-enter your home.

You should consider installing lightning protection systems, especially if you live in a lightning-prone area. It’s also important to ensure your Philadelphia insurance home policy is up-to-date at all times. Contact your agent if you need to update your policy.
